Moviemaking Bootcamp 1

July 19, 2021 – July 30, 2021

Online you can learn the best ISO at which to set your camera, or what buttons to push on your editing software.

But there’s a vast gulf between knowing the technology and making great movies. That’s where Key Light Movie Academy comes in. We focus on the art of moviemaking.

In this bootcamp you’ll get:

  • The secrets of great storytelling, in the screenplay and in the visuals.
  • How to prepare to shoot a movie from the mindset of orchestration and the final edit.
  • Applicable, practical directing skills that give you credibility and confidence with your crew.
  • More applicable, practical directing skills for working with actors.
  • A workable approach to getting great lighting.
  • A specially refined toolkit of editing techniques.
  • Personal attention and feedback from working professionals as you build your own experience and approach.
  • A ton more.

Everything taught is information that has been forged from real-world experience and years of master’s level training.   This class will have you thinking like a professional moviemaker.

Note the term “bootcamp”. It is designed to give you a load of information which naturally takes time to process; but you’ll take the toolkit with you and begin to grow, not only as a creator of moving pictures but in all creative endeavors.  The principles you’ll learn in this class cross mediums and build creative muscle for all disciplines.

Upcoming Fall Classes

Each of these classes will run from the week of September 6 for ten weeks, meeting one day a week, ending the second week of November. (Actual days of the week are yet to be determined.)

Moviemaking Bootcamp 1

The same material that will be taught in the July Bootcamp but spread over ten weeks through the fall.

Moviemaking Bootcamp 2

Bootcamp 1 gives the Indispensable Essentials; Bootcamp 2 offers a deeper dive into each area: scriptwriting, directing, lighting, editing, etc. In this class you work on refining your personal technique as you gain a broader moviemaking toolbox. You’ll also be encouraged to shoot another movie and show it at the Movie Showcase on the last day of class.

Scriptwriting

This is the foundation – great storytelling. You need to learn the classic approaches to scriptwriting which formed the foundation of moviemaking for more than a hundred years, and also the alternatives. In this class you will learn these approaches and also study the work of the great script writers from William Goldman and Billy Wilder to Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino.

Nothing makes you a better writer than writing. The goal of this course is for you to produce one ten-to-fifteen minute script and at least half of a feature script, (about forty five pages). You will get feedback from working professionals on whatever you write during this course.

Directing

Every director needs to create their own approach to getting the good stuff on camera. But to get the good stuff, you should know something about everything: scriptwriting and analyses, pace and rhythm, lenses, composition, camera movement, the craft of acting, methods for getting good performances, shooting for editing, etc., etc.

This class covers all of this in depth and also studies the methods and styles of great directors such as William Wyler, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Wong Kar Wai, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, and others.

During the ten weeks of this class you’ll be encouraged to direct a ten-to-fifteen minute movie and show it at the Movie Showcase on the last day of class. Like writing, the only way to become a better director, to hone your personal approach, is to do it.
