Online you can learn the best ISO at which to set your camera, or what buttons to push on your editing software.

But there’s a vast gulf between knowing the technology and making great movies. That’s where Key Light Movie Academy comes in. We focus on the art of moviemaking.

About

KEY LIGHT
Our Passion for filmmaking

Key Light Movie Academy is defined first by excellent instruction.  In fact, it is masters level instruction.  All of our instructors have masters degrees and have taught at accredited universities or are working professionals.

Second, we offer a level of personal attention that you cannot get from online courses.  We take a mentoring frame of mind. Our goal is to invest in our students so that we can discern their strengths and weaknesses.  This allows us to speak to where each student is on the moviemaking path.

Third, we are committed to igniting creativity.  We aim to build an environment of excitement about moviemaking, about learning, and about getting better at our skills.

We believe that technique and knowledge of equipment isn’t enough.  While we teach the best techniques, we aim to teach those techniques in the service of story, and powerful communication skills.

Check out our student feedback section to see how we’ve done in the past.

What people are saying.

“I learned everything I know about Directing from Jay Black. Not only did he teach me the
foundations of filmmaking – how to direct actors, the revelatory power of the camera, and the
significance of building a believable on-screen reality – he taught me something even more
important: attention-to-detail. There’s no way I would have directed three feature films if I had
not been mentored by Jay. His constant encouragement and impassioned wisdom empowered
me to strategically pursue my dreams. Anyone who has the opportunity to learn from Jay is
truly blessed.”

-Josh Overbay, Assistant Professor, Western Carolina University, David Orr Belcher College of
Fine and Performing Arts

“Jay Black is experienced, skilled and friendly—both as a teacher and a filmmaker. He is as
knowledgeable as he is passionate about filmmaking. I’ve had the privilege of observing and
benefiting from his teaching methods in the classroom, as well as from his professional
approach in the field, making films. An expert in both theory and practical application, Jay
makes his classes informative, enlightening and fun.”

-Dave Garcia, Assistant Professor, Baylor University Department of Film and Digital Media
